This course offers a variety of engaging activities designed to introduce children to the fundamentals of Scratch programming. Using the first coding blocks in Scratchโ€”such as motion, looks, sound, events, and controlโ€”students will grasp key concepts like editing backdrops and sprites, event coordination, x & y coordinates, loops, and message broadcasting. As children create with Scratch, they will develop creative thinking, collaborative skills, and systematic reasoning. Lessons are tailored to the age group, utilizing age-appropriate methods like storytelling, games, and animation to teach programming concepts effectively.

What Will You Learn?

In this course, youโ€™ll learn to code starting from the very basics. Scratch, developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), makes programming both fun and approachableโ€”almost like playing a game. Youโ€™ll create your own games and applications while mastering fundamental coding skills. By the end of this course, youโ€™ll not only be able to create animations and cool effects but also replicate popular games. These skills will serve as a foundation for quickly learning text-based programming languages.

Course Outline

  • Lesson 1: About Me Program. Students will create backdrops and transform them into a slideshow by coordinating events and switching backdrops.

  • Lesson 3: Dialogue Between Sprites. Teaches message broadcasting and motion through the creation of sprite dialogues.
  • Lesson 4: Dance Party. Covers motion, editing backdrops, and using loops to create an animated dance party.
  • Lesson 5: Ping-Pong Game. Introduces Scratch 2 with a focus on x and y coordinates, sensing, and variables while creating a simple game.
